There
are excellent opportunitunities to utilize vast quantities of small-diameter
materials and waste from forest thinnings in biomass/bioenergy projects.
Most of these involve reducing tree limbs and small-diameter tree trunks
to wood chips or wood pellets. A tremendous effort is underway in Colorado
and the region to use biomass for heating and power systems. Consumers can
indicate their support of these projects and receive more information by
filling out our questionnarie. Much of the technology for implementation
of these projects is in use in other areas of the United States but is new
to the Colorado region. Some local efforts include:
A-1 Organics of Brighton uses locally produced
wood chips for landscaping materials.
Renewable Fiber of Fort Lupton recently received
grant money and investment capital to build an animal bedding processor.
The shavings will be used at ConAgra and Longmont Foods facilities.
Several composting projects have been initiated
and several more are being studied. The goal is to use biomass from
local projects for post-fire rehabilitation work, mining reclamation
efforts and agricultural uses.
